Background
In July 2025 Marin Wildfire contracted with a team of modeling and data experts (including Sonoma Technology, Inc., Willow Labs, and Vibrant Planet) to update Marin County’s 2020 CWPP. The purpose of a CWPP is to provide a science-based assessment of wildfire hazards and threats to homes in the wildland urban interface (WUI) of Marin County. The CWPP is being developed through a collaborative process involving the project team; Marin County fire agencies; county officials; county, state, and federal land management agencies; Fire Safe Marin and community members. It will meet the requirements set forth in the 2003 Federal Healthy Forests Restoration Act for the development of CWPPs, which include:
What does the update to the CWPP include?
The updated CWPP integrates existing mitigation projects and address emerging risks, with a focus on ensuring dynamic tracking of mitigation progress. The goal is to inform future work plans starting in 2026 and to foster a collaborative, community-wide approach to wildfire risk reduction. The team’s collective experience includes the development of the 2016 and 2020 Marin CWPPs and key contributions to Marin Wildfire’s innovative data-driven approach to adaptive management.
Throughout this process, Marin Wildfire and Fire Safe Marin have engaged with local stakeholders, including fire agencies, government entities, community members and residents, to ensure the CWPP is comprehensive and addresses the concerns of the community. With a collaborative process in place, the CWPP identifies high-risk areas for immediate attention while laying the groundwork for future improvements in wildfire preparedness and resilience.
