South San Rafael Hill Fuel Reduction Project

Example of a fuel reduction project

The South San Rafael Hill Fuel Reduction project reduces hazardous fuels on the southern slope of San Rafael Hill. The fuel reduction zone is composed of 3 adjoining parcels owned and managed by the City of San Rafael and the San Rafael Elks organization. The area has a history of ignitions, including a 12 acre fire in June of 2018. The current phase of this effort includes vegetation management on 5.4 acres of lands within 100 feet of buildings in the project area. Project activities target non-native invasive vegetation, dead and down woody debris, and other fire hazardous vegetation while seeking to retain healthy native plant communities. Future phases may incorporate activities throughout the remaining 34-acre project area.
